Sean Bean as Carver Doone (above and below)
|
Lorna Doone is R.D. Blackmore's epic tale of a young country yeoman, John Ridd, who takes on the murderous Doone clan. Sean played Carver Doone, who fired the shot that killed John's father when John was still a child.
John falls in love with Lorna Doone, much to Carver's chagrin. Lorna is not a Doone, however, she was kidnapped as a child during the raid where John's father was killed. Lorna herself does not know this, and has grown up believing the Doones to be her family.
Matters come to a head when John rescues Lorna from her self-imposed confinement, after the Doones reject John's claim for her. By this point Carver has killed the incumbent head of the clan, and assumed the mantle himself. He swears revenge on John, and the family farmhouse is besieged by the clan. Carver makes off after they are defeated, but returns dramatically when he fires shots at John and Lorna's wedding, wounding Lorna. John chases him and they fight, and Carver slips into a treacherous pool. Driven by the sight of Carver's young son, whom John has adopted, John tries to rescue him but it is too late - he slips under the water and is lost.
Sean plays Carver with great aplomb, relishing the badness of the character, whether casually leaning against a wall, with a wicked smile, to desperate rage and flight.
